Did you know that the history of board games can be traced back to the pre-date literacy skill development in the earliest civilizations? Here are the oldest of the oldest board games. They are s0 old that their rules and mechanics are still debatable up to now. Read on.

c. 3500 BC – Senet, probably the oldest board game in the world has been found in Predynastic burials of Egypt. This game has is a grid of thirty squares, arranged in three rows of ten and uses pawns (at least five of each and, in some sets, more).

c. 3100 BC – Senet has also been found in First Dynasty burials of Egypt. It had been pictured in a fresco found in Merknera’s tomb (3300-2700 BC).

c. 3000 BC – Mehen, another game from Predynastic Egypt that is both what appears to be a mythological character, and a board game. It is played with lion-shaped game pieces and marbles.
