Pretty much everyone who wants to be connected and in the know are on twitter. Most companies see twitter as a viable tool for discussion and a great social platform for conversation and marketing releases. The best part is, any company can utilize it for free–except in Japan!

Everyone had it coming: Premium Twitter Accounts. Japanese tweeple will now be charged under a new payment model to view tweets from premium accounts.

Twitter is very popular and it will not come as a surprise how it is worth a lot of money. However, the service is free making it available to pretty much anyone who wants to utilize the platform.

The new payment model for twitter was announced at the Mobidec2009 conference by the chief operating offie of DG Mobile (a twitter investor in Japan). Beginning January of next year, premium twitter accounts can now charge their followers a premium for those who want to read their tweets. Charges range from $1.15 to $11.60.

It seems that now, Japan will be the only country which will use the premium payment model. For now, it is the only country which allows for page advertisements on twitter. If the project becomes succesful and lucrative, twitter users will now be seeing the emergence of these twitter accounts.
