A new infra-red camera is said to be able to detect tattoos, this is a great way to help solve crumes and figt bad guys as it can help to identify suspects and even find leads in investigations.

Criminals, whose tattoos had been identified in police reports, had been known to change tattoos in order to evade crime and identification. The new infra-red camera could determine whether the new tattoo is an original one, or one which is used to cover the old one.

We all know that ordinary cameras can capture only what our naked eyes can see, that which is on the surface of the skin. A camera which is sensitive to infrared rays can see hidden layers on the skin, determining the previous tattoos or scars which were used to be hidden by the tattoo on the surface.

The camera was created and researched in the University of Derby , David Bryson a lecturer in the university believes that the application of photography and forensic science is a great way to help fight crime.

He specialises in forensic imaging, “Identifying individuals using tattoos has been an established part of forensic science practice for some time, but there can be cover-ups of tattoos with lasers, more tattoos or surgery.

“It is now possible to take a control photograph and a separate photograph with an infra-red filter to take images of the tattoo, and determine if it is indeed the original or is a cover-up, or altered tattoo on the surface.”
