Foursquare and Gowalla may have pioneered location based social networking but it does not mean that the game is all theirs as the biggest social networking site in the world joins the game.

It is no secret how Facebook has set the facade in terms of social networking. Now, they join the likes of Gowalla and Foursquare by adding a “Where are you?” feature. Facebook users who have smart phones can now check in to locations. This is Facebook’s venture to the location services craze. Facebook users with smart phones can declare their locations–whether bars, parks, malls, or what have you. Like every location based service, players can earn badges and share their friends where they are.

With a wider network of people who use Facebook, as opposed to Foursquare and Gowalla, observers believe that they might succeed with this venture. While it was pioneered by Foursquare and Gowalla and other various startups, the prevalence of more smart phones with GPS access lets more users join in the game.

Like Gowalla and Foursquare, no one is forced to check-in at every location. You can opt out of playing if you would want to be a little private on some days.
