Last July 20th, the homepage of Google featured a doodle to commemorate the 189th birthday of the father of genetics, Gregor Mendel.

Gregor Mendel’s study on the inherited traits of pea plants paved the way for other scientists to consider genetics as a separate discipline; hence the “Google-shaped” peas shown on the homepage of the popular search engine.

Nothing interactive or flashy or catchy on the design… even so, the doodle appears to get its job done anyway; clicking on the doodle leads to a search page on Gregor Mendel, taking a bit out of the user’s time to re-introduce the man considered to be the father of modern genetics, to commemorate him, and to give him the recognition that is due.

Two days later, and in the same vein, the homepage of Google featured a doodle to commemorate the 113th birthday of Alexander Calder, the famous American sculptor credited to have invented moving mobiles.

These doodles are actually a few among hundreds that Google has featured on its homepage in recent years.

Mighty interesting, eh? Makes you wonder what they’ll come up next. Maybe next time, the doodle will be so great searchers will end up forgetting what they were supposed to search for in the first place. Whatever else comes next, Gadgetepoint is sure to report.
