Whether it’s sheer goodwill or just mass marketing, Google’s decision to make Android open source and more easily accessible and marketable to the masses seems to be paying off better than anyone expected. With this, the Android phones go as low as $80 and this is sweeping the whole African region like fire.

Three hundred and fifty thousand handsets of Huwaei’s Ideos phone was sold all throughout Kenya. What’s remarkable about this feat is that more than half the population of the African country subsists with less than two dollars per day.

And what can you get for $80? A 2.8 inch display screen, a 3.2 megapixel camera it also comes with 256 MB RAM. Not bad, not bad at all.

This boom of the sales of Android handsets in the region could be a function of two things. The first one is that they are way cheaper than their competition plus they have a reliable name to back things up. But they have always been that cheap. So economists are saying that Huawei’s positive numbers are a function of the dollar’s depreciating value.
