US Department of Justice Shuts Down Megaupload Incites Hate From the Internet
When Megaupload was shut down by the US Department of Justice it only served to create a backlash where many internet users and oppositionists of the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, declared war.
A warrant for its indictment was issued to the Virginia based company to cease its operations. Not only that, but even arrest four of its proprietors who are living in New Zealand. Kim Schmitz one of its founders were arrested and has some of his property seized. Kim Tim Jim Vestor and Mathias Ortmann their other founders were also arrested.
Megaupload is a file-sharing site. Users can share content in the website-music, books, movies, gazillions of photos-whether they are pirated or not. Its CEO, Swiss Beatz-a top hip-hop and R&B producer and is also Alicia Keys husband, is backed by support from many of his friends in the music industry. Among those who are supporting Megaupload are Busta Rhymes and PDiddy.
It is believed by SOPA oppositionists that this move by the US Department of Justice will only serve to increase the incidence of takedown-before-trial cases. Where websites, even at the slightest suspicion that they are hosting pirated content, will be shut down even without prior trial. Guilty before proven innocent.
