Hasbro sues Asus for Transformer Prime

Transformer – an apparatus used for reducing or increasing the voltage of an alternating current.

While this may be the real meaning of the word, everyone living in the 20th century can not help but relate the word Transformer to the line of Toy Robots by Hasbro, the multinational toy and boardgame company from the US. What with the three-movie franchise by Michael Bay, Transformers had become a household name.

To be reminded of its popularity, perhaps, Asus named one of its tablets the Asus Transformers. People will inevitably think of the robots when they hear the word, but since the word itself has nothing to do with the line of toys with Hasbro and can refer to the electric device used for alternating currents, Hasbro can not run after Asus solely because of the name.

But Asus may have gone too far as its most recent tablet, the Asus Transformer Prime is named too close to one of Hasbro’s robots. While the current trademark separates toy robots to computers–thus is not covered by the law–Hasbro believes that Asus has infringed their copyrights as the Hasbro line of robots is expanding and may expand to computers and gadgets in the near future.

While there is currently no development on the case as of writing, seeking damages as well as a temporary injunction on the Transformer Prime which has recently been released in the market.

This is too much hassle on both sides. This may even hinder the Holiday sales of both companies–especially for Asus.

Merry Christmas, Twitter! – Saudi Arabia

It seems that it’s Christmas time over at Twitter as Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud and his Kingdom Holding Company invested $300 million dollars on the social networking site.

“Our investment in Twitter reaffirms our ability in identifying suitable opportunities to invest in promising, high-growth businesses with a global impact,” Prince Alwaleed said about the investment.

The 26th richest man in the world seem to be investing a lot on media and entertainment related companies as he is known to have interests in several media outfits in Saudi Arabia, among some of these are Citicorp and  the Saudi Research and Marketing Group (SRMG) in which he holds roughly 30% of its shares.

The brilliant idea was not all his alone as Prince Alwaleed’s team is passionate on the media industry. “We believe that social media will fundamentally change the media industry landscape in the coming years,” Eng. Ahmed Halawani, KHC Executive Director of Private Equity and International Investments shares.

There is no denying that the $300 million investment will greatly benefit the microblogging service, but it is yet to be confirmed on how this will affect how things will go with Twitter.

The Saudi Prince does not even own a twitter account, but his wife Princess Ameera Al-Taweel is one of Saudi Arabia’s most famous tweeters as she has over 83,000 followers.

Unlike the prince, not all of us has that kind of money to spend on things we love. Christmas is a hard time for our pockets so we have to make better financial decisions. Gadgetepoint is a nice place to find coold gadgets at very affordable prices.

The rise of the Ultrabooks

Personal computers have evolved from the stationary desktops, the muscle laptops that can compensate for the desktop’s workload, the more portable notebooks and the lightweight, extremely mobile netbooks.

And if you’ve noticed, nowadays everyone has their own netbook. Some uses it as their primary computer while others have the luxury to switch between the more powerful laptops. But why would they? Because the netbooks are mainly for word processing, reading files and obviously for surfing the net. The heavy work still has to be shouldered by the bulkier and more feature packed laptops.

But what if we have a device that has both qualities? The portability of the netbook married to the power of a laptop? Did I hear you say Macbook Air? Well, that would have been a great idea if they didn’t pennypinch on the memory that reminded us of the laptops in the early 2000s. What we’re talking about are the ultrabooks—the real deal.

Ultrabooks, as CNET.com have branded them, are the new netbooks. And these lightweight gizmos have already graced us with their presence in 2011. All we have to wait for is for is for their prices to come down to a more earthly level and watch their performance get better.

Be it the affordable Acer Aspire S Ultrabook or the functional Asus Zenbook, or maybe the flashier Toshiba Portege Z, you know we at GadgetEpoint will cover the news for you!

Tired of Flat Tires?

Bridgestone Airless TiresWith Bridgestone’s airless tires, you wouldn’t have to worry about flat tires again.

In the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, Bridgestone showed off this technology which is a potential game changer. Though Bridgestone wasn’t able to present an the Airfree tires in actual car units, but only on 9-inch units on electric carts.

Nonetheless, the technology that was exhibited by Bridgestone on the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show is still noteworthy. Though airless tires can already be seen on military vehicles and others that do not use threads.

Though Michelin has already ventured into this side of tire production, however it was generally a failure. The Tweel airless tires suffer from issues such as excessive heat, noise, and vibration.

However, the technology used to produce Michelin’s attempt at the market is so different from what Bridgestone is using.
But we all know that a 9-inch model would fare differently to a real life vehicle. And for Bridgestone to actually change the market and make an impact with this product, they’d have to test the viability on actual cars. But the difference would be so big, it’s like going back to the drawing board.

Car crazy? Gadgetepoint may not sell actual cars, but the toys there are good enough to sate your car craving.

Facebook Unveils Timeline

It is no secret that Facebook is one of the most visited website in the world. With more than 800 million active users, Facebook could easily be one of the most defining things of today’s generation. Facebook constantly changes to provide dynamism to its users. It has recently changed from the Facebook wall to the new Facebook Timeline.

Facebook Timeline was first made available to developers and some select beta users. It has only been made available to everyone today.

Facebook Timeline is a complete overhaul of the Facebook look. As with the many times the social networking site has changed, it has gotten mixed reviews from users. Some were annoyed at the new look, while some adore the change. One of the most noticeable changes on the new Timeline is the addition of a Facebook cover photo, a header which is put on top of one’s timeline page.

It has gone under public critique too many times over its changing privacy controls and policies, which has caused many people to be annoyed and disappointed by the many changes. Many people rally to bring back the old Facebook, but it seems like Timeline is here to stay as it has been the biggest change in Facebook just yet.

PhotoWhoa – Group Buying for Phootographers

Groupon and other group buying websites have become so popular the past few years that a lot of them spring up from every corner of the internet. since, they’re a dime a dozen, many of which are struggling to create an identity. That’s a problem that PhotoWhoa will try to eliminate as it enters the field with some sort of differentiation.

Photowhoa offers daily deals for photgraphers. As the website says, PhotoWhoa allows you to get exclusive deals off photography products and save up to 90% on gear, software, and training.

What’s good about it is that if you’re looking for something photography related, you’d know where to look. However, the variety of deals that will be visible from PhotoWhoa would not be as extensive as that from what you can see from Groupon, and other group buying websites.

We’re thinking that this website will not get a similar rep from those in China as they are reported to be losing money since people are saying that the products sold on their website are counterfeit or fake.

Since a lot of photography enthusiasts know their products real well, as they get more expensive by the way, due diligence is expected, selling counterfeit products to people who do know what their looking for and looking at will not be an easy task.

If you’re looking for high-grade and authentic toys, Gadgetepoint is the place to start. Satisfaction and authenticity guaranteed!

Origami Stroller Folds by Itself

Wow! It looks like every thing is becoming more and more automated these days.Automation is so common that the aforementioned statement is one of those that goes without saying.

Well, baby strollers are not exempt.

The 4Moms Origami Stroller is a stroller that is not only portable, but folds by itself. And did we mention that it can also charge your USB power devices?

This is the 21st Century baby stroller and it may not be the best for those who are into knitting baby bonnets. How many baby strollers with LCD monitors have you seen? And how many strollers have you seen that can actually fold to less than half its size before with just a twist and a push of a button?

And how on earth can a stroller power USB-charged devices? Well, on top of all the technological advances already integrated into the technology of the 4Moms Origami strollerm it’s also charged through solar power. So while you’re walking in the sun, the stroller stores up energy.

A word of warning though, automation also means that when things go wrong, it could get scary. Imagine if a baby were in the stroller at the same time the stroller is in the process of self-folding. Ouch, we’re going to here some crying!

Gadgetepoint makes it a point to check the gadgets that they are safe as safe can be.

China’s Group-Buying Websites Not As Successful as Hoped

Group-buying websites tinker with the concept of economies of scale. As the number of the production grows bigger, things will be easier to produce. On the converse, consumers will also benefit from this concept. As the number of transaction increase, the total transaction cost will also decrease.

This is the concept behind group-buying websites which allows them to get a leverage and acquire deals that couold even give as much as 80% discount because the prices are pre-negotiated.

It benefits the consumer as they buy the products at a pre-negotiated and cheaper price. It benefits the producers because a sale is still a sale. And the middle man, or the group-buying website also gets a certain commission from these transactions. Sounds like a fail proof business model?

Not if the websites are getting a bad rep.

Group-buying websites are not getting the similar success that Groupon has experienced in other shores.

In China, group buying websites are on the state of decline. After accusation and a lot of word of mouth saying that some products are fake, these websites are having a difficult time in the market. Add to this the fact that they are sprouting from each corner like wild mushrooms.

China’s had around 6,000 group-buying websites at one time. 456 shut down on October alone, making the tally 1,483 before the last month of the year starts.

The need to be competitive adds fuel to the already growing fire of lack of sales dues to the public not biting into the deals because of qualms of the item’s authenticity.

If authenticity is the name of the game, Gadgetepoint customers have nothing to worry about.
